GetGreen and The Marine Mammal Center partner to combat climate change

Project Background

About The Marine Mammal Center

The Marine Mammal Center and GetGreen have teamed up to drive education and action on climate change, the number one threat to marine mammals in the United States.
Location: Sausalito, CA (open to visitors)

What they do: Advance ocean health through marine mammal rescue and rehabilitation, research and education. Number One Marine Mammal working hospital in the world, saving thousands of animals per year.

The Problem

“Climate change is the number one threat to marine mammals. To help marine mammals, its important to take action on climate change.”

What did GetGreen do?

  • GetGreen created a customized version of the GetGreen app for The Marine Mammal Center - The application is focused on education about climate change and marine mammals, and steps users could take to combat climate change to help preserve the oceans. It also includes customized actions on ocean preservation - learning about and switching to sustainable seafood and community fisheries, learning about marine mammal health - on top of the normal GetGreen catalog of hundreds of individual sustainable actions.
  • GetGreen and the Center also included special actions for center visitors to take, focusing on green transportation options, participating in plastic free July and home energy conservation. Finally the application contained custom actions and badges to drive deeper engagement with the center itself, including attending special Science Sunday events and volunteering on marine mammal rescue.
  • Each action within a Project corresponds to a number of “leaves” earned which show cumulative impact and the amount of carbon mitigated. The 52 users registered with The Marine Mammal Center Project completed 1,179 actions, earning 4,206 leaves! That mitigated about 18 metric tonnes of carbon. That’s like taking 3.9 cars off the road for a full year! This was done in just 9 weeks! The 28 volunteers committed engaged 7,048 visitors about climate change, sustainable seafood and ocean trash. The youth inspired 593 pledges through the text/SMS campaign.
  • GetGreen was used to create a special program for Marine Mammal Center Youth Ambassadors - Student volunteers are an important part of The Marine Mammal Center, providing interpretation and information to center visitors and helping to direct centers in ways to help marine mammals. Youth Ambassadors could log all their daily discussion on climate change with center visitors in the GetGreen The Marine Mammal Center application. Top Youth Ambassadors were recognized for their work and received prizes ranging from gift cards to GetGreen T-Shirts.

How was GetGreen App used?

Ongoing Work between GetGreen and The Marine Mammal Center

GetGreen The Marine Mammal Center is being expanded to center visitors and members now through a series of information campaigns. Now the Center members have a fun, engaging way to take direct action on climate change and help preserve the oceans and marine life.
